It seems that bed bugs were once virtually unheard of, but in recent years they've made a unpopular comeback. Bed bugs are small (about the size of an apple seed), wingless nesting bugs that feed on the warm blood of mammals leaving you with small, itchy red welts wherever they bite you. What do bed bugs look like? Well, I found a photo and as shown they tend to nest in crevices and seams of mattresses. One of the things that Serenity Bed and Breakfast Inn does to protect our Guests from bed bugs is we inspect each bed for bed bugs each and every time we change the sheets. It's really a simple check. We run our fingers around the seams to lift the seams up and visually inspect the mattress top and bottom. Visual inspection is a very good way to identify an infected bed. An inspection only takes a few seconds and once you get used to seeing what you see it's easy to spot anything out of the ordinary.
I am happy to report that Serenity Bed and Breakfast Inn has NEVER had bed bugs anywhere in the B&B, but we are always vigilant and mindful that they could appear. Bed bugs aren't particularly dangerous - certainly not like some spiders can be, but they idea of bugs sucking your blood is just disgusting. In our opinion, lodging facilities have been slow to respond to the recent rise in bed bug reports. We are not aware of any lodging facility (aside from Serenity B&B) that has a policy to address bed bugs, let alone publically states what their practices are to prevent or reduce bed bug infestation. However, we feel that the traveling public is entitled to know. Rest assured that at Serenity Bed and Breakfast Inn, each bed is fully inspected every single time the bed is changed. If hotels would train their staff on what to look for and then insist that the cleaning staff inspect every bed every time its changed, the problem would be virtually eliminated. The fact that there is a problem and it's growing is only proof that hotel chains are not taking the time to inspect beds regularly. We want the traveling public to know what Serenity Bed and Breakfast is doing to ensure that your room is clean and free of bugs and pests. We appreciate your business!
